Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) within the WSC system provides a structured and fair mechanism for acknowledging prior experience. It helps maintain international consistency, avoids unnecessary duplication of training, and supports the smooth integration of experienced coaches and tutors into the global coaching framework.

What is RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal process within the World Squash Coaching (WSC) framework that acknowledges the existing knowledge, skills and experience of coaches or tutors. Instead of repeating training they have already achieved elsewhere, RPL provides a pathway for these individuals to have their previous learning assessed against the standards of WSC qualifications. This ensures that prior education and experience are valued and that coaches and tutors are not disadvantaged during the transition to the new global framework.

How RPL is Applied

Applications for RPL are assessed by the World Squash Coaching Panel (WSCP) in consultation with the Programme Manager. The WSCP determines whether a coach or tutor’s current qualifications, past training or relevant experience meet the requirements for a WSC level. In cases where there is uncertainty, the WSCP has the authority to decide the most appropriate level or to set conditions such as undertaking a bridging course, refresher course or practical assessment. This process is particularly important during the initial implementation of WSC to ensure consistency across nations and to provide clear and fair recognition for those with established qualifications.

Who is Eligible

RPL is available to coaches and tutors who already hold an international squash coaching or tutor qualification, or who can demonstrate relevant experience in coaching or playing at a recognised standard. For example, current or recently retired professional players may be granted accelerated entry into Level 2 after completing the Foundation Course. Similarly, tutors with equivalent national or continental qualifications may be short-tracked into WSC tutor roles at the discretion of the WSCP. Eligibility is always subject to review, and final approval is given by the WSCP in conjunction with the relevant continent or national federation.

Applying for RPL

Coaches or tutors seeking Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) must apply through Squash Australia. Applications are then reviewed and endorsed at that level before being forwarded to the World Squash Coaching Panel (WSCP) for consideration. The WSCP, in consultation with Squash Australia, will assess whether the applicant’s existing qualifications, professional playing history or relevant experience meet the standards of a World Squash Coaching (WSC) level. Where appropriate, applicants may be granted direct entry, credit towards a course, or advised to complete bridging or refresher activities. Final approval always rests with the WSCP.
