The Squash Australia Level 1 Referee Course introduces candidates to the fundamentals of squash officiating, providing the skills to supervise and referee at club, state and national junior events. Delivered in partnership with World Squash Officiating, the course includes online learning and testing, with certification valid for two years. Successful candidates are recognised as certified referees in Australia once all Squash Australia domestic requirements are me.
What is the Level 1 Referee Course
The course is designed for players, volunteers, and recreation centre staff who wish to develop basic officiating skills. It covers rules of the game, officiating principles, safeguarding, complaint handling, and integrity in sport. Candidates learn to supervise and manage squash matches effectively, with certification recognising them as accredited referees within Squash Australia.
How is the Course Applied
The program combines World Squash Officiating (WSO) modular coursework with Squash Australia domestic requirements. Candidates must pass the online assessment, with a maximum of five errors allowed across 25 questions. Once certified, referees can officiate at interclub, state pennant, graded events, and up to Silver-level Australian Junior Squash Tour events. Certification is valid for two years, after which recertification is required through both Squash Australia and WSO.
Who is Eligible
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and hold a current Squash Australia membership with a valid Working with Children Check. Pre-requisites include completion of WSO Level 0 Rules of Squash, Sport Australia Community Officiating General Principles, and Sport Integrity Australia’s safeguarding, complaint handling, and competition manipulation courses. A minimum of 12 months’ experience as a Level 1 referee is required before progressing further.
