What is an Appraisal?
A referee appraisal is a structured process that supports referee development and ensures consistent standards. It provides constructive feedback on decision-making, match management, and communication, helping referees grow in confidence and skill.
How Appraisals Work
-
Plan – Set expectations and context for the appraisal.
-
Observe – Watch referees in action, focusing on decisions, positioning, and conduct.
-
Decide – Compare performance to WSO standards.
-
Record – Document observations and outcomes using official forms.
-
Feedback & Action – Provide clear, constructive feedback and create an action plan for improvement.
The process is supportive, not pass/fail, and is designed to build stronger officials.
Who Can Conduct an Appraisal?
Appraisals are conducted by trained and accredited Referee Appraisers, who complete the WSO Appraiser Training Course. They are responsible for ensuring fairness, consistency, and confidentiality in every appraisal.
