Young talent take control of the court

The quarter final matches got underway at Victory Squash Centre in the Gympie PSA Satellite, treating the local crowds to entertaining matches and a couple of upsets.

The highlight of the night came from the Women’s PSA quarter finals when 2nd seed Sarah Cardwell went head to head against 5th seed Alex Haydon. Cardwell came out hard in the first game, but Haydon proved too strong for her opponent, defeating Cardwell in a thrilling 4-sets. 8-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-9 (34 mins).

Fourth seed Tamika Hunt took on 6th seed Madison Lyon. Hunt is currently on the comeback trail after a 2-year break and Lyon put her to the test, showing her athletic ability to keep the rallies going. Hunt has continued her fine form from with a dominant 3-0 win over Lyon, 11-9, 11-5, 11-5 (21 mins). 

The final match of the night saw 4th seed Thomas Calvert take on 5th seed Solayman Nowrozi. Calvert fought hard, however Nowrozi took control of the match, dominating the ‘T’ and forcing Calvert out of position resulting in too many errors. In the end Nowrozi defeated Calvert 11-4, 11-3, 11-6 (29 mins).

2:00 pm - [1] Rachael Grinham v [3] Jess Turnbull 

2:40 pm - [1] Joseph White v [3] Bryan Lim

3:20 pm - [4] Tamika Hunt v [5] Alex Haydon

4:00 pm - [2] Nicholas Calvert v [5] Solayman Nowrozi

The event is taking place at Victory Squash, Gympie and entry is free to patrons who wish to come and watch the action.
