The final day of the 2023 Australian Junior Team Championships promised to be action-packed and it sure did deliver!
For the first time since 1989 Victoria achieved the ultimate goal, knocking juggernaut Queensland over to take home the 2023 AJC Division 1 Team Title.
After a devastating display of skills, tactics and fierce determination over three days at Brisbane’s Daisy Hill Squash & Racquet Club the battle for the title came down to the final round, fittingly QLD V VIC.
VIC team co-captain Andre Lynn led the team to win 10 matches to 7 to secure the title with 51 total points.
Following the historic win, Lynn said the team worked hard as a group to set themselves up for success.
“We were pretty strict with our bedtime, with all our rules and morals, we got the basics right and then everything just came together,” he said.
“Our coach Anthony Hill really instilled in us to tick off all those 1 percenters, it all builds up over time to get the win.
“I unfortunately won’t be playing next year as I will have aged out but I hope the younger kids now have some inspiration to keep winning titles.”
Fellow Team VIC co-captain Courtney Scholtz shared that courtside support was one area the team focussed on.
“It feels amazing to have won our first team event in 30-something years, I couldn’t be happier to do it with this team,” she said.
“There were a lot of nerves heading into today, we knew there was a lot on the line so every game mattered.
“Our goal for the competition was to be the loudest, we wanted to be heard from the furthest court and we did it, I think at the end that was the big difference.”
While QLD were runners-up for Division 1, they didn’t go home empty-handed, taking the win in the inaugural edition of Division 2 with 27 total points.
Team QLD held off runner-ups ACT on 22 points, with NSW finishing on 20 points, VIC on 18 points and TAS with 13 points.
QLD co-captain Josh Porter said the team tried their best and left it all out on the court.
“The team environment was great to meet new people and bond with each other over the last few days.
“All three of our coaches have been a huge help this tournament, we can’t thank them enough for their efforts. We couldn’t have done it without them.
“While we didn’t get the win this year the team played to the best of our abilities and that’s all we can ask for.”
