Turnbull and Lobban flying the flag for Australia in Birmingham 2022 singles

Jess Turnbull and Donna Lobban will be in action on Day 3 of the Commonwealth Games when they take to the court for their women's singles Round of 16 matches.

After beating Malta's Colette Sultana on Saturday, Turnbull has set up a clash with 5/8 seed Lucy Turmel of England.

The two will go head-to-head on Sunday 31 August from 12pm (local time)/ 9pm (AEST) on Court 1.

Turmel, who is just 22-year-old, is one of several young English women inside the top 50 and broke inside the top 25 in the World Rankings for the first time in 2021. She beat Papua New Guinea's Amity Alarcos 3-0 in her first match of Birmingham 2022.

Both competing in their first Commonwealth Games, it will be the player's first time encountering each other on the singles court.

"I've had a hit with her once, and she obviously a very strong player, has solid length and a hard hitter," she said. "I also have nothing to lose so I'm going to go out there and do my best."

Turnbull came up against Turmel on the doubles court earlier this year, where Alex Haydon and herself beat Turmel and Georgina Kennedy at the World Doubles Championships in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, Lobban will be one of the last players in action on Day 3 when she faces 5/8 seed Emily Whitlock of Wales.

Whitlock is considered one of the most talented players on the PSA World Tour and is currently ranked no.19 in the world. The 28-year-old beat 14-year-old Anahat Singh of India in the Round of 32.

Lobban has come up against the Welsh player on five previous occasions with their last encounter at the Edinburgh Sport Club Open 202 where the Australian prevailed in a tough five-game match to reach the semi-final.

Their match will get underway on Sunday 31 July 7:30pm (local time)/Monday 1 August 4:30am (AEST).

The squash competition is being played at the University of Birmingham Squash Centre, with the action live and free on 7plus.
