Strong start for top seeds on opening day of 2025 Australian Junior Championships

The opening day of the 2025 Australian Junior Championships held at the Ballarat Squash & Racquetball Fitness Centre has come to a close with several top seeds posting strong performances to advance onto Day 2.

U19 Boys top seed Jackson Wylie (NSW) kicked off his campaign in Round 2 when he faced Pierre Ibrahim (VIC). Ibrahim coming off a comfortable 3-1 (11-3, 9-11, 11-3, 11-3) win over Tait Streek (QLD) earlier in the day to book a match against Wylie. The Australian junior representative proving to strong for Ibrahim to claim a 3-0 (11-1, 11-0, 11-4) and move into Round 3 where he will face Aiden Finlay-Mulligan (WA) on Monday.

On the opposite side of the draw, second seed Marcus Wang enjoyed a bye in the first round. Before powering through the second round with a commanding 3-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-7) over Ashank Gupta (TAS). The victory sets up an all NSW affair when he faces Daniel I. Yanez M. (NSW) in the third round. Yanez M., along with Australian representatives Joshua Rahul Raj (QLD), Haider Naqvi (VIC) and Stanley Chung (NSW) advancing to the third round without dropping a game.

The U19 Girls draw saw the completion of Round 1 on the opening day of competition. Defending champion Sarbani Maitra (QLD) encountered the bye on Day 1 and is set to face Jade Reynolds (NSW) on Monday afternoon on Day 2. Reynolds overcame a tough battle against Lucy Keogh (ACT) in her opening match earlier in the day to walk away with the win 3-0 (11-2, 11-8, 11-7).

Meanwhile second seed Hannah Slyth (WA) put up a convincing show to down Tammara Bone (SA) 3-0 (11-1, 11-2, 11-3). Slyth her represented Australia at the World Junior Squash Championships in Cairo will tackle Amelia Brigden (NSW) in the second round. Brigden enjoyed a 3-0 (11-4, 11-3, 11-5) victory against Hailey Frankcomb (NSW).
