Squash Australia has awarded Life Membership to Peter Wright OAM, recognising his extraordinary contribution to the sport spanning more than six decades. The honour marks the first time Life Membership has been awarded in 20 years.
Peter has been involved in Masters squash since its inception in 1980, serving as President of the Victorian Masters Squash Association in the early 1980s before taking on the role of President of the Australian Masters Squash Association (AMSA) in 1986, a position he held for over 30 years until 2023.
During that time, Peter served as Championship Director for the World Squash Titles in 1995 and 2001, World Technical Director for the 2009 World Masters Games, and sat on the Commonwealth Games Committee for squash in 2005.
As a player, Peter won three World Masters Squash Championships and was runner-up four times. He is a five-time Australian Masters Champion and five-time New Zealand Masters Champion, and has represented Australia as a player, manager and captain on 12 occasions.
In 2015, Peter was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for services to squash, tennis and football. That same year, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Squash and Racquetball Victoria and received a Distinguished Lifetime Award from Squash Australia. He also received the Hans Ebeling Award in 2010, Legend Status from the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2019, and Legend Status from Squash and Racquetball Victoria in 2020.
Peter is a Life Member of AMSA (2002), the MCC Squash Section (2009) and Squash & Racquetball Victoria (2017).
Squash Australia CEO Rob Donaghue: “On behalf of Squash Australia and the squash community, I want to congratulate Peter on everything he has achieved as a player, as an administrator, and as someone who has dedicated so much of his life to this sport.
“Peter's contribution to squash in Australia is immeasurable, and his legacy will be felt by players and clubs for generations to come. He truly deserves this honour,” he said.
