Scott earns Australian senior team call-up

Two years ago, Thomas Scott thought representing Australia at a senior World Teams Championships was unrealistic.

Now, the 20-year-old is preparing to make his senior international debut in Korea.

Scott has been named in Australia’s men’s team for the 2026 World Squash Teams Championships after making significant improvements over the past two years, including a move to the Gold Coast that has helped accelerate his development.

“I’m very happy, I’ve improved quite a lot in the past couple of years,” Scott said.

“I was definitely looking at it as something unrealistic two years ago, but then I managed to catch up to everyone else a little bit. I’m just super happy.”

Making the Australian team has been a major goal for Scott over the past year, providing extra motivation through training and tournaments.

“Ever since I thought I was slightly in the mix, it’s been a motivating factor to try to train hard and do well in the events preceding it,” he said.

The opportunity is particularly significant for Scott, who will make his senior Australian debut alongside fellow first-timer Oscar Curtis, with experienced campaigners Joseph White and Dylan Molinaro also in the squad.

“It’s unreal, really,” Scott said.

“I’ve always loved playing in teams, and especially being able to play for the Australian senior team is pretty cool. I’m just super excited to be in there.”

Scott credits a difficult period following the World Juniors, including a number of injuries, with helping him reset and put together a stronger training block on the Gold Coast.

“I think, especially because I did so badly in the World Juniors and had a lot of injuries, I was able to get some good training in since moving to the Gold Coast and improve a little bit faster,” he said.

The hard work has continued, with Scott training twice a day from Monday to Friday, alongside regular gym and physical sessions.

“Definitely a lot of training,” he said.

Now the goal is simple – make the most of the opportunity.

“My main thing I was working towards was actually getting into the team, so now I’m just trying to show myself as best as I can once I get there,” Scott said.
