Oceania Champs to be decided on Super Sunday

Published Sat 13 Apr 2024

The stage is set for a brilliant final day of competition at the 2024 Oceania Junior Championships with the finalists in all but one division now decided.

Nine of the ten top seeds remain in the hunt for titles, with five players still on track to defend the crowns they claimed last December in New Zealand.

Sunday’s action will open with the Under 15 boys semi-finals before the 10 finals are played out.

UNDER 19
Queensland’s Madison Lyon defeated New Zealand’s Ella Lash in the 2023 Oceania Championships final and the pair will meet for the second time in four days on Sunday.

On Thursday, Lash came from two games down to win the Australian Junior Open title, and today she twice came from a game down on her way to victory over compatriot Sophie Hodges.

In the Boys draw, AJO champion Thomas Scott (NSW) was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Daniel Marsh, however the West Australian couldn’t get past top seed Oliver Dunbar (NZL) in the semi-finals.

Dunbar now takes on Hong Kong’s Arthur Pak Ki Law who was too strong for Freddie Jameson (NZL).

UNDER 17
The top two seeds will do battle for the Boys U17 title after both fought their way through to the decider. New Zealand’s top seed Brodie Benett now has the opportunity to defend his crown against Malaysia’s Saatindraa T S Mohan Raj.

Bennett will be looking for retribution following his loss in Thursday’s Australian Open final, while Raj was forced to come from 1-2 down in his quarter-final before winning five straight games to make the final.

Malaysia’s Xin Yii Lee went down to Pakistan’s Mehwish Ali in a brilliant five-game AJO final on Thursday but 48 hours later turned the tables the qualify for the Girls U17 final. In another long match, Lee outlasted the second seed in four games to move into the decider where she will face top seed and defending champion Erin Wyllie (NZL).

UNDER 15
The Boys Under 15 semis will be played early on Sunday with four players still in contention to make the final.

Defending champion Henry Kross (NSW) is still on track for a title defence but will first need to get past New Zealand’s Vihan Chathury. Second seed Joel Raj (QLD) has not dropped a game so far in the tournament and will be looking to continue that form against Malaysia’s Nevellton Jinggan.

Victoria’s Tina Ma will be looking to back up her Australian Junior Open win when she faces Brooke Valois in the U15 Girls final. The Kiwi fought past Queensland’s Lilly Wilson to prevent a rematch of the AJO final, and will be attempting to deny Ma a second Oceania title in the space of four months.

UNDER 13
The top two seeds have both qualified for the OJC Under 13 final.

Emily Senior (JPN) will be hoping to turn the tables on Mahnoor Ali (PAK) who defeated the top seed in the AJO final on Thursday.

In the boys final, Thomas Wang (NSW) has the opportunity to defend his 2023 title but will need to get past China’s Yuanxi Liu.

UNDER 11

AJO runner-up and second seed Aleister Loo (VIC) has the chance to go one place better on Sunday after making his way into the OJC final.

He comes up against unseeded Nathan Lin (NSW) who has had a charmed run through the opening days. After taking down a 5/8 seed in the first round, Lin defeated another unseeded player before receiving a walkover past the number one seed who defeated him in the AJO second round earlier in the week.

India’s Aradhana Singh has a chance to win her second title in four days after making it through to the OJC final.

There she will meet Queensland’s Abbey Boswell who will be hoping to flip their AJO semi-final result from Wednesday.
