History making season for Masters legend

Geoff Davenport put on a master class in 2024, winning his seventh Masters World title.

For this incredible feat, Davenport was named the Masters Player of the Year at the Squash Australian Open Gala Dinner in Brisbane in March.

“This is the first award I have ever won in the 51 years I have been playing squash, so it is pretty special," Davenport said. “It is just nice to get recognition for the hard work you have done.”

It was a historic season for Davenport, with his seventh title making him the first player in the sport's history to reach this milestone.

For Davenport, his love of the sport, combined with a well-organised and competitive Masters schedule, is what has kept him on the court all this time.

“I have loved the sport since I first started when I was 16,” he said. “For me, Masters has prolonged my squash career.

“If I didn’t have World Masters every couple of years and Australian Masters, I certainly would not have kept playing at the level that I am.

“Masters sport enables everybody in sport to continue to play throughout their whole lifetime. It is about camaraderie, meeting people and having fun, and I love it.”

Over his time in the sport, Davenport has witnessed squash evolve in several ways and believes the possibility of being included in the Brisbane 2032 Olympics would do wonders for the game's growth.

“It would be huge (to have the sport included) because it is a profile thing; it is going to build the profile of our sport.”

And after 50 years of playing the sport he loves, Davenport shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

“I want 10 [World Titles]!” he said. “I wanted to win one, then when I won one I wanted to defend the title.

“Then I wanted to get a hat-trick…It has become a bit addictive, so I think 10 is a good number.”
