Greg Lobban Commits to Australia Ahead of LA 2028

Squash Australia has welcomed world-class player Greg Lobban as he begins the process of representing Australia, marking a significant boost for the nation's elite squash program ahead of the sport's debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

The Scottish-born world No.22 has commenced the process of obtaining Australian citizenship after opting out of representing Scotland at the upcoming European Team Championships.

The move comes as Lobban and his Australian wife, former world No.13 Donna Lobban, continue to build their lives in Australia.

A five-time Scottish National Champion and winner of 16 PSA Tour titles, Lobban has been a mainstay of the international game for more than a decade. His career highlights include a bronze medal in the men's doubles at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and consistent top-25 world rankings.

“Squash Australia has got such a rich history. You’ve had world champions before and Squash Australia has dominated the sport,” Lobban said.

"My job is just to try and do the best I can for Squash Australia and I'm going to do my best to be able to get to the Olympics and then hopefully put Squash Australia in a better position to have Squash in the Olympics in 2032.”

Lobban said his family had always planned to move to Australia and the opportunity to chase an Olympic dream had sped up that plan.

“Australia has always felt like a second home throughout my life, especially because my wife's Australian and we've been together for 12 years now. It doesn't feel too foreign to be representing Australia in the future,” he said.

“It's a really exciting opportunity to come to Australia and represent Australia, especially with my family having ties here. It was a decision that was not only for myself but also for the betterment of my family and I think a lot of people would make the same decision.”

The addition of Lobban strengthens Australia's high-performance program at a pivotal time, with squash set to make its historic Olympic debut at LA 2028.

Squash Australia CEO Robert Donaghue said he welcomes Greg’s decision and is looking forward to seeing his impact and inspiration for the emerging Australian squash talent.

"Greg and Donna have long been a part of the squash community in Australia, and we look forward to continuing our strong relationship with them and supporting Greg in this next exciting chapter of his squash career."

Subject to the completion of the citizenship process and eligibility requirements, Lobban is expected to become available to represent Australia in future international competition as the nation builds towards the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games and beyond.
