Facility Spotlight: Nerang Squash Centre

The Nerang Squash and Fitness Centre was originally built in the 1970s, but has recently undergone major renovations due to flood damage.
Located on the banks of the Nerang River, on the outskirts of the Gold Coast, the building was subject to flooding under the floorboards after decent rainfall in the area.
However, the centre managers, David White and Toni Maxfield, with financial support from the building owner, recently transformed the rotting squash courts into beautiful state-of the art courts that were up to the standards of hosting the Queensland Junior Squash Championships earlier this year.
Alongside new floors and a waterproofing membrane, the Nerang Squash Club received a grant through the Community Gambling Benefit Fund to replace all lighting with new energy efficient LED lighting, and replace, and add, ventilation fans throughout the building.
David said it was exciting to see the renovations completed in time for their centre to host the state Junior Championships.
“The QJC was the first major tournament held at Nerang since our renovations,” he said.
“We had over 100 junior squash players, and their families in the centre over the weeklong tournament. It was a very busy time, as we also had our weekly night competitions running as well.
“It was great to be the host centre and to watch the best junior squash players in Queensland.”
The Nerang Squash Centre pride themselves on their thriving junior program which has been steadily growing over the years.
“There was already a junior program at the centre when we took over,” David said.
“We have slowly improved the Junior numbers to be between 30-40 each week. The majority of our Junior players are 9-12 years old, with a few older advanced/elite Juniors.
“We are looking to start a Junior Racquetball (Squash 57) program for juniors later this year.”
