Australian Open sets sights on record crowd

The Squash Australian Open is calling on the Australian community to pack the Piazza in 2027, with the goal of creating the biggest attendance for any squash event in the world.

Returning to the spectacular South Bank Piazza for a third consecutive year, the Squash Australian Open has grown into one of the sport’s premier events, bringing the world’s best players to the heart of Brisbane on an epic glass court.

Organisers are challenging fans, families and the wider community to be part of something bigger than the competition itself.

A sold-out Piazza would create the biggest crowd ever assembled on the PSA Squash tour, putting Brisbane at the centre of the sport on the world stage.

Squash Australia CEO Robert Donaghue said the time was right to turn the event’s growth into a landmark moment for the sport.

“We want to pack the Piazza,” Mr Donaghue said.

“We want to see not only Brisbane, but the wider community and Australia get behind this event and show the world what squash can look like when you bring the best players together in an incredible setting.

“We’ve built something special over the past two years at South Bank, and now we want to take it to another level. The ambition is to pack the Piazza and create the biggest crowd squash has ever seen.

“This is an opportunity for people who love squash, people who have never watched it before, and everyone in between to be part of something historic.”

The event’s South Bank setting has become a defining feature of the Squash Australian Open, with the glass court providing a unique sporting spectacle against the backdrop of Brisbane’s riverfront.

The 2027 edition will build on the momentum of the previous two years, with a world-class field set to showcase the speed, skill and athleticism of professional squash.

Australian hopes will also be on display, with Greg Lobban and Joey White among the players looking to make their mark as the tournament progresses through the early rounds.

“It's been fantastic to see the growth of the Australian Open. Obviously, it went from a Bronze event several years ago to now being a Gold event, and hopefully we can push it even further in the upcoming years as we lead into LA and Brisbane 2032,” White said.

“It's been really amazing to see that progression. I think it's great to see the amount of support from the local community in Brisbane, but also from the Australian squash community.”

The Squash Australian Open offers locals the chance to see some of the world’s best players up close, while giving Australian competitors the opportunity to test themselves against elite international opposition on home soil.

Donaghue said packing the Piazza would be about more than attendance figures – it would demonstrate the appetite for squash and help build momentum for the sport in Australia.

“Squash is fast, exciting and incredibly entertaining to watch. When you see it live on a glass court, with the crowd right around the action, you understand what makes the sport so special.

“We want people to come down to South Bank, bring their friends and family, experience the Australian Open and help us create an atmosphere the players will remember.

“Every person in the crowd can play a part in making this the biggest squash event the world has ever seen. It’s time to pack the Piazza.”

The Squash Australian Open is more than a professional squash tournament. It brings together the world's best players, grassroots competitors, kids trying squash for the first time, local businesses and the wider Australian squash community.

With the world’s best players, Australian contenders and one of the most striking settings in international squash, the 2027 Squash Australian Open is inviting Brisbane to get behind the game and help make history.
