South Bank to host Squash Australian Open in 2027

Australia’s rising squash stars have wrapped up a valuable campaign at the 2026 World Squash Junior Championships in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada, with the girls team securing another quarter-final finish and the boys ending their tournament with a strong victory.

The Australian girls finished eighth overall, marking the fourth time in the past five World Squash Junior Team Championships they have reached the quarter-final stage. The consistent results underline the strength of Australia’s emerging female talent.

The 2026 City of Devonport Tasmanian Open concluded in spectacular fashion on Sunday, with three finals going the full distance to cap off an exciting week of PSA Squash Tour action in Tasmania.

As the fourth stop on the Australian Squash Tour, the tournament attracted a strong international field, with Hong Kong's Nga Ching Cheng claiming the women's title and Wales' Owain Taylor taking out the men's championship after a series of high-quality matches.

Australia's Sarah Cardwell and Thomas Scott led the local charge, both advancing to the semi-finals against tough international opposition.

For more than four decades, squash has played a significant role in Peter Anich's life, taking him far beyond the four walls of the court.

What began as a switch from tennis in 1979 has grown into a lifelong passion, with squash providing Anich not only with a competitive outlet, but also lifelong friendships and benefits both on and off the court.

“I switched from tennis to squash when I returned to Mosman from boarding school to do Grade 12 because the tennis competition wasn’t strong,” Anich said.

“The people and the vibe mainly, but I also sleep better and feel better if I am squash fit.”

For Wodonga's Scott Petts, competing at the 2026 World Squash Masters Championships is far more than another tournament – it's the fulfilment of a dream more than 40 years in the making.

A lifelong member of the Wodonga Squash Club, who also regularly competes at the Commercial Club Albury, Petts and his family will make the journey to Perth the old-fashioned way, embarking on a caravan adventure of more than 3,500 kilometres before he steps onto court to represent Australia.

For Petts, however, the event is about much more than squash.

For almost 50 years, squash has been a constant in Anna Bowen’s life, providing competition, friendships and a strong connection to the squash community.

What started as the occasional game with work colleagues in Perth during her teenage years became a lifelong passion when Bowen moved to Northam in 1977 and joined the local squash club.

“I was a stay-at-home mum with a new baby and looking to meet new people, and find things to do,” Bowen said.

“I joined the Northam Squash Club and proceeded to play and be involved in squash ever since.”
